Batteries....Batteries....And Guess what I forgot the cable to download data opps.

So the story beginning, another adventure into the wild once again. A journey from Fairbanks to Toolik Research Station south of Prudhoe Bay on the Dalton Highway at the North Slope foothills. The drive was amazing up there. When we arrived up there I forgot the cord to connect to the the datalogs. We have 4 - 75 lbs batteries at 1 km with the a transmitter, 6 - 75 lbs batteries at 600 m with a receiver and data logger, 3 - 100 lbs batteries with the two sonic anemometers , and at the road where the famous "Silver Bullet" is located there where 7 - 100 lbs batteries with the other receiver, transmitter, and data logger where located.

We saw some hunters up there on horse back since they were not allowed to drive on the research site part of the DOT/NSF/UAF. The first operation was to take down the sonic anemometers. We arrived at the site at 4 pm. I thought we had the cord to download the data. So I opened the boxes to find no cord. I walk to the 600 m and found no cord to downloaded the data. So I thought to myself without disconnecting the datalogger from power, because somehow my advisor has it in his mind that disconnecting the dataloggers from power will erase the data. This is true from some commerical dataloggers. We completed taking down the sonics and hull ass back to camp were we proceed to call my advisor and tell him the bad news. We double check the manual and found that we could disconnect from the power source, but just to be sure we keep them connect to a power source.  We continued until 10:35 PM till the sun tips its hat in a kind gesture for the night to begin.
We arrived back at camp to watch a shooting star come down right over Toolik Lake. As night begin I got out of the truck and watched the aurora flow above and could see more stars above than even in Fairbanks. It was pitch black and amazing to see stars that many people never enjoy fully. You might be asking yourself right now how did we get the batteries and instruments up here at first. We hulled them up in a vehicle. My advisor, and three REU students, and myself carried, connected, and triple checked every connection. Anyways back to the real story. John and I went for a hike and took the batteries from the site. We forgot the cord.
We had to be very careful with the connection on the BLS unit. Here is John carrying one of the 75 lb batteries and a sunset at Imnavuit Basin. The Institute of Arctic Biology Toolik Field Station (TFS) is a world-renowned Arctic climate change research station located in the northern foothills of the Brooks Range in Alaska at 68° 38' N, 149° 36' W, elevation 720 m. Toolik-based researchers have access to 87,000 acres designated by the Bureau of Land Management as a Research Natural Area. This research station was original built for the pipeline along the Dalton Highway in the 1970s. We carried the batteries out and that was that. We drove back to Fairbanks roughly a 6 and a half hour trip and arrived back in Fairbanks on at 8 pm on Saturday.

The Battle Within

I watched in front of the café

I watched in front of the café

As you moved briskly without a care across the street
Against the late evening city traffic
The horns rang out and the voices of taxis drivers’ cursed you
You seemed distressed not a care in the world at all about what people said about you
And lead my eyes across the street to where you stop
I saw you alone in that formal black dress standing in the middle the old fashion European bridge

I thought you would be happier with another since you moved on
I remember us yelling, the pain, and the destruction of my love for you and our friendship
My friends at the table laughed and taunted you, but I kept quiet
They insulted you and I turned to them and agreed, for we were average men
I chuckled a bit and wondered what he had done this time for a brief moment

With the moonlight reflecting over the still ripples of the river
And the ancient streetlights’ glow the scene become quiet
The mistral wind lightly nudged your hair against your bare back and shoulders
A sudden look of pain…an instant thought…you stared out into the city with a sorrowful and blank look
I watched as you brushed your hair back fighting against the urban winds

I drank the last of my cappuccino and paid my dues and respects to my friends
I rose and walked confidently to the corner of the street intersection
The street traffic began to die down as the city slept after midnight
You glance over briefly, but took no real notice of me
Your stare rattled me briefly, but I stood my ground against Fear
I look at my pocket watch and brush my hand over my young shaded bread

Turned, I proceeded to walk onto the faded marble walkway towards you
Through the path of broken dreams and expectations
You glanced again this time with interest and curiosity
You revealed your tears and the havoc they’d done with your beautiful facial appearance
Should I approach? What will the consequences be? Will she run or will she stay?

A soul needs to be full of happiness and never sorrow
Your soul’s energy drove me closer like a magnet
I wanted to know what had happened, but you twisted away from my stance as I approach
My hands reached out to grip your escaping wrists
I pull back with all my strength luring you into a common seductive tango move
My hands then move to hold your waist and I pulled the rest of your body closer to me

A bridge was instantly built between this physical connection
Feeling the rush of your pain and sadness into my soul
I share my overwhelming feelings of happiness exponentially
The memories of life, love, family, friends, and feeling of familiarity

Your hands cupped in the clutches of mine
My warmth soothing your cold emotion
I released my grip from your soft small hands
You thrust your head deep against my chest
Your fingers tore at my shirt and you broke into a deep sorrowful cry
As a lone wolf would howl at the full moon in the dead of winter
You listened to my calm voice as I cradled you against my body
Feeling the rhythm of my strong masculine heartbeat
In a melody of a thousand drums in a festive spring march
I felt your tears upon my chest as they saturated my button shirt
My arms were around you and I will never liberate this eternal lock of love
My warmth spreads to your naked back and I felt the fringes of your long hair
You ask me why I came and I reply as a true gentleman
You ask me to hold you forever and I replied
You tell me you are afraid, but I say I will never leave
You try to explain your sadness; however, I place my lips on your forehead kissing softly
And you abruptly stop your speech of the night

You look up with a stare of exploration, adventure, and peace
Opening yourself to my gaze I stare back to see the journey you have travel with him
Your eyelids shut and I kiss you again this time passionately
A spark of static electricity flows between our union
Stronger than anything you and I have ever felt
The breathless kiss seemed to be one of God’s perfect creations

All my senses told me time had stopped
I did not feel the temperature of the air, seeing the glow of the streetlamps,
And the thoughts of worry evaporated
My mind, heart, and soul synchronized at once this time all agreeing
Throwing all mental and physical stimuli into this eternal kiss

As we broke the engagement of rapture, I felt all of my nerves give way
I experienced our bodies, spirits, and minds as one. Could you have felt the same?
It was as if I understood the universe peering though the eyes of God
Reality came as fast as it left…The sounds of the city came calling back
It was over…the ultimate feeling…the sacred ecstasy…stored as just a memory
You smiled and breath a breathe of cold fresh air
I smiled back and felt your heartbeat sync with mine
And you place your head back on my chest

Time past…we must have stood there for hours
The Sun’s raze touched the tallest skyscrapers in city
The brightest star chased the night stars back into hiding
The sky was alive with shades of Purple, flavors of Orange, and variations of Blue
I whispered love to you and you whispered love back

The smoke plumes from the upper apartments cast shadows upon the ground
As the sun rose above the horizon
I notice you had fallen asleep in my arms as I took me eyes off of you just for an instance
I felt alive and I knew now that I truly loved someone with all my heart and spirit
